The purpose of this report is to evaluate whether Ocean Carriers Inc. should immediately commission a new capesize carrier that would cost $39 million, and would be completed two years hence, in order to finalize a lease of the ship for a three-year period with a potential charterer in very good faith. The contrasting tax regulations between the two countries where the company locates its office, and the different cost-benefit circumstances under different length of time in service are considered in the analysis. Taking all available information into consideration, we highly recommend that the company should purchase the new capesize carrier, have it registered under the Hong Kong office, and put it on a scheme for a 25-year service. Industry Prospects Capesize carriers are mainly used to carry iron ore and coal worldwide. The daily hire rates are therefore determined by the total exports of iron ore and coal, the distance between the exporting countries and the destinations, and the fleet size of capesizes in service. According to the market trends, in the next few years, Australian production in iron ore is expected to be strong and Indian iron ore exports are expected to take off. However, imports of iron ore and coal are expected to be stagnant in next two years. Therefore, total exports of iron ore and coal will be flat in the coming two years, and will rise remarkably in the following few years. Besides, as East Asia countries absorb the largest portion of the iron ore imports, the joining of India to the iron ore exporting won’t significantly increase travel distance because Australia is almost the same distance away by water. Moreover, in 2001 and 2002, 63 and 33 new capesize vessels would be delivered adding up to about 17% of total capesizes currently in service. Consequently, in the first two years, the supply of capesizes would be greater than the demand, the daily hire rates are expected to decrease. But in the mid-to-long run, the daily hire rates are expected to increase continuously. Revenues and Costs – Intuitions Before going into the numbers, we want to discuss some intuitions of this project that support the decision of purchasing the capesize. First, the increasing mid-to-long run daily hire rates will provide basis for promising future cash flows. Secondly, although the daily hire rate for the first two years are expected to be low, the charterer had already offered a rate higher than expected to compensate the company. Thirdly, a great portion of the expenditures come from the preparation for special surveys which should be renewed every five years if the ship needs to stay in the business. The high escalation of costs between the second and third surveys, and the fourth and fifth surveys, indicates that maximum net present value of the project would be achieved when the carrier serves for either 15 years or 25 years. Free Cash Flows In this part, we will discuss the detailed numbers. Some assumptions are made based on the economic outlook and company characteristics when calculating free cash flows. We assume that inflation rate is 3% per annual, and that operation cost would increase 1% above inflation rate per annual. We assume that discount rate is 9%, and will discuss the impact of a rate change later. Provided that the scrape value is estimated to be $5 million at the end of the fifteenth year, we estimate that the value would decrease to $4 million due to more wear in the steel. Please refer to Exhibits 1 to 4 for the calculations of estimated free cash flows and NPVs. We can see that if the company chooses to purchase the capesize, have it registered in Hong Kong instead of USA, and runs it for 25 years, the NPV will be the highest compared to other alternatives. Besides, the Hong Kong option (have the vessel registered in Hong Kong) dominates the USA option (have the vessel registered in USA) because no tax is required in Hong Kong in these operations. Also, the 25-year option dominates the 15-year option because, even if the scrap value is reduced to zero after 25 years, the NPVs for options that keep the capesize for 25 years are still higher than for 15 years. Sensitivity Analysis In the above calculations for the NPVs, we assume discount rate to be 9%. If the discount rate is higher, the NPVs for the projects will be reduced because the benefits from recording depreciation and tax deferring will increase. For example, we found that the USA-25-year option will produce a positive NPV if the discount rate is lowered to 6.67%. However, even if the discount rate is as low as 0.1%, the HK option still dominates the US option, and the 25-year option still dominates the 15-year option. Conclusion To sum up, if Ocean Carriers Inc. purchase a $39 million capesize carrier immediately, register it in Hong Kong, sign the three-year contract with the charterer, and keep the vessel in business for 25 years, based on estimations, it would acquire the largest possible NPV of $3.89 million on the project.

He said that a medium affects the society in which it plays a role not only by the content delivered over the medium, but also by the characteristics of the medium itself. McLuhan believed that print media was the greatest influence in society. It took us from a primarily oral society, where the only means of spreading news or information was through verbal interaction with another person. When print media came about, this all changed. Suddenly information and news was printed, and all that needed to be done, was read. As print media heightened our visual senses, our verbal communication and interaction declined, leaving people far more private. This caused individualism to blossom, as social skills declined. With the introduction of the electronic age, we were acquainted with an audiovisual environment and given the opportunity to interpret the information in more than one way. With this, McLuhan then stated that different medium provoke different levels of participation from the individuals who consume it. He coined these differences as Hot and Cool Media. According to McLuhan, technology is an extension of the body. It improves, and helps us perform at a better rate, and does what the body cannot do on its own, be it some means of transport that is an improvement on walking, or something as primitive as a shovel too help us dig. Every extension is based on one before, and is normally seen as an improvement on its predecessor. However, when technology is over-extended, and starts to tip the scale more in a negative favour, it is referred to as an amputation. McLuhan comprised a tetrad of questions that, when asked, helps decide if the technology is merely an extension or if it is in fact an amputation. Hot and Cool Media In Understanding the Media, McLuhan stated that different media encourage different levels of participation. If you look at a photograph for example, very little participation is needed from the viewer in order to complete the photographer’s point of view or message. Because we single out one sense, and stimulate it above all the other, we would refer to this as â€Å"HOT† Media. In contrast to this, McLuhan used the example of a Comic, which gives us very little information, and encourages the reader’s participation to fill out the blanks in order to actually fully understand and enjoy the content. This is known as â€Å"COOL† Media Because Hot Media does not encourage as much participation, McLuhan states that more could be learned from Cool Media. He used the difference between a Lecture and a Seminar as another example. According to McLuhan, we are leading more and more into a society dominated by â€Å"HOT† media because the extensions of technology are becoming more independent of human operation and interaction. We are now able to go on virtual tours through existing buildings as well as those that are yet to be built. The most common and accessible of these interactive replacements is the Nintendo Wii. The Wii is a gaming console that has reached the point where is has wireless operation and reacts to and with human motion. Its games range from common play station gaming like world of warcrafts and tactical gaming, to fitness and sport orientated games and programs with which you can play virtual matches or have simple workouts. Instead of doing physical sport outside or in a more social environment like a gym, people can now exercise in the comfort of their own home. And for those that didn’t do sports or any general form of exercise due to embarrassment, inconvenience of any other reason now have the opportunity to get active. It has also changed video gaming in a huge way. Players now actually needs to physically get involved in the game when playing, and the cordless remote makes movement easier and gives the player more freedom. With the educational games, Wii has made learning easier, and more entertaining. By making it rewarding, people are more eager to actually know the information and get the answers right. They start asking questions like what they would get if they actually have the right answer, which misses the whole point of purely being educated. What is retrieved that use to be obsolete? The Wii encourages fitness, interaction and participation. With the digital era, fewer people are as active as they use to be a few years prior. We depend more on technology than ever, and seem to do fewer and fewer things for ourselves. Games like the Wii fit encourages physical activities for some that would not normally do it out of their own, by rewarding them for what they do. The educational and general knowledge games challenge people mentally, which general society doesn’t do as frequently as it use to, due to the fact that technology does most of our work for us. What does the medium reverse into when over-extended? This gaming console encourages more interaction than most. The most logical progression would be virtual interactive gaming, where player â€Å"step into a world† in which they play. They will be entirely involved in the dynamics and progression of the game. It will create a hyperreality that mimics a â€Å"real word†. The educational system could also lapse over into a media based development, where children learn via virtual tutors. Only problem is that they are constantly stimulated and entertained, and in the end, this could simply lead to shorter concentration spans rather than just more accessible knowledge. Conclusion Therefore, if one looks at the Wii, many will argue that it is a step forward in technology and that it is needed to keep up with our ever-changing world. It teaches us skills that are needed in everyday life, as everyday life is becoming more and more technologically dependant, and that this is our future in its simplest form. Others might argue that we are become less and less self-efficient and more and more dependable on the technology around us. We cannot function without computers and cellular phones anymore, and because of this, we have become more vulnerable without even realizing it. The only way in which a person could get alcohol legally was through the prescription from a licensed physician. This was repealed by the twenty first amendment which once again allowed alcohol to be sold legally. There has also been legislature which has determined that no one under the age of 21 may consume alcohol in the United States and states are given the right to set restrictions on types of alcohol sales and hours of operations for establishments selling alcohol (Gately, 2008). What is alcohol? Alcohol is both water and adipose soluble. The chemical composition for alcohol (ethanol) is C2H5OH. The polarity of the molecule caused by the oxygen is what allows alcohol to interact with the body. This means that alcohol can go in and affect around 90% of the body’s components and systems. It specifically functions as a depressant by lowering the neuroelectrical activity in the central nervous system which in turn affects other parts of the body. Ethanol is specifically linked to dealing with the inhibition of the neurotransmitters acetylcholine, GABA, serotonin, and NMDA receptors. Alcohol also stimulates the secretion of dopamine in the dopaminergic reward pathway which is what accounts for the euphoric effect associated with drinking (Begleiter, & Kissin, 1996). This is also seen in the interaction with GABA receptors. GABA is principally used by the body to control stress response. Alcohol stimulates these receptors on GABA neurons which are why people usually report feeling calmer and more relaxed after consuming alcohol. This is also what helps with the psychological effect because this good feeling is reinforcing the alcoholic behavior. In addition to the physiological effects that are caused by the disruption of the levels of these neurotransmitters, there are also psychological effects to be considered. At first, when he arrived, people thought he was a ghost, is important to mention that Silas’s appearance is a bit strange, he shows a physical deterioration, he has signs of aging and illness, and he is described as an old man. And as I commented previously, he was an isolated hermit obsessed with his gold, admiring it every night, and his world is reduced to his work and his coins. This is the problematic that is established before the loss of his gold. Why not let him weave and enjoy his money until he’s too old to keep on weaving? Why draw this out for so long? In my opinion, the idea I get from the book is that Silas earned more money on Raveloe than in Lantern Yard (where he has to pay some money to the church) and he saw this fact, after which began his obsession and he lived like this for sixteen years. And he could have lived on this way until his death but when Eppie came to his home it brought about a change in his whole life. I think he draws it out because work and money becomes the centre of his life; he lives only for work and to admire his gold. 4. Silas’s masculinity in a viable way. Is this one kind of masculinity or masculinity in general? I think this is one kind of masculinity because not all men have a situation like Silas’s. Other male characters like the Cass brothers have a masculine role and are seen more like a men than Silas is. I see this as a viable way because I believe that Silas is completely masculine even if there are things that show him with a lack of manhood. I’ll start with the â€Å"negative† points against his masculinity. Starting with his occupation, it was established that spinning and weaving had a gender division and that it was a female task, in this point, I don’t think that this job defines his masculinity, he is a man and here the only important thing is that he has an occupation and he is working to support himself. In addition, Silas’s behaviour is interesting on a mental level. I see his capacity for self-control a masculine skill too; it is a characteristic of a great man. For example, when William and Sarah betrayed him, he knew it and acted quietly and did nothing; only go on with his life. Another way of showing self-control is in his isolation, and his high degree of rationality. He has been injured, accused of robbery, abandoned by his fiancà ©e, rejected by the community only because he did not want to be an ONG and after that he has the rationality to make a decision. After that it is normal that he wishes to be alone working and earning money. And finally, even if he is portrayed as an insect or a weak man, in an attempt to diminish his masculinity the capacity that he finds for being a father, a mother and a protector of little Eppie is highly admirable without question. By having enough knowledge for self-sufficiency, to me he is a secure man who knows what he wants and simply acquires and achieves it. In addition I’d like to say that making his home more comfortable for the child, decorating it, a â€Å"nest† for her-, is the sweetness way in which a man can show how capable of being tender is. Preparing his home for Eppie’s needs is something to be expected from a very masculine man. In his own way, he did what every man must do: work, support a household, have a family and protect his family (according to this nineteenth-century period, nowadays it is different, as women can do this alone too). And he did it; he is totally a man. 5. Conclusion. We have seen Silas’s journey, not a physical journey, but throughout his life. At first he has a normal life, he later becomes an outcast obsessed with gold and after Eppie’s arrival he undergoes a kind of social rehabilitation into an ordinary member of the community. After meeting the child he completely changes his role inside the neighbourhood, every place or home he visits for work he must sit and talk with people about the child. Through her his life changes and he becomes another man. We see his domestic, social and paternal side and how he achieves the role of masculinity in the nineteenth century; not exactly as it was imposed, but by in his own way. Through the adoption of the child we see Silas accomplishing both – a male and female role, because he is completely devoted to the little girl, and how he passes from a completely isolated life to finding meaning in all the things around him. In Eppie he finds a reason to live, a family that was denied him (his mother and little sister died, and we do not know about his father), the comfort of being love sincerely by someone, of being needed, and of being a father, and there is no moment, in my opinion, where his masculinity could be misunderstood. We can also see, through the adoption the morality and responsibility that Silas is prepared to assume fatherhood, which is too a masculine characteristic, it is necessary to emphasize that the duties that Silas accepts are those that Godfrey Cass, Eppie’s biological father has no morality or responsibility to assume. Throughout the book there is no moment when I feel Silas is not achieving the role of a man. I only felt adm iration even if didn’t have obvious masculine characteristics such as physical appearance of a strong and wealth man like Godfrey Cass. Even when he grows old he still has this powerful appearance that Silas, in contrast does not. Godfrey does not have to work because he was inherited from his father and Silas worked as an independent man. This was a prototype of industrial manhood and a new ideal for men. To finish, another point that I found interesting is that Silas didn’t want to achieve the ideals of the perfect man according to society but he ended up doing so, though his virtuous nature, his generous heart, his courage. At that time in history, women did just what they were expected to do. They were expected to be good daughters, good wives, and good mothers. A woman was expected to move from the protection of her father's roof to the protection of her husband. Edna didn't fit this mold, and that eventually leads her husband to send for a doctor. It is here that Edna Pontellier says words that define The Awakening, "I don't want anything but my own way. That is wanting a good deal, of course, when you have to trample upon the lives, the hearts, the prejudices of others - but no matter_" As the book begins, Edna is a married woman who seems vaguely satisfied with her life. However, she cannot find true happiness. Her "awakening" begins when a persistent young man named Robert begins courting her. Edna begins to respond to him with a passion she hasn't felt before. She begins to realize that she can play roles other than wife and mother. Throughout the book Edna takes many steps to increase her independence. She sends her children away, she refuses to stay at home on Tuesdays (as was the social convention of the time), she frequents races and parties. Unfortunately, her independence proves to be her downfall. Edna stays married because divorce was unheard of in those days. She wants to marry Robert, but he will not because it will disgrace her to leave her husband. No matter how much Edna exceeds social boundaries, she is held down by the will of others, despite what she wants. In today's world divorce, sadly, is almost commonplace, but in her time she would have been an outcast of her society. By the end of The Awakening, Edna feels like a possession - of her husband, of her children, and of her society. The only solution she sees is to end her life, which she does by swimming out into the sea until her strength gives out. This is a very symbolic death. I feel the theme of The Awakening is deeper than the obvious themes of independence and women's rights. The Awakening presents suicide as a valid solution to problems that do not offer many choices.

Reasons Behind the High Rate of Dropouts

A great majority of Houston†s children enroll for school after they have enjoyed summer vacation. Houston area dropout rates list starts at full capacity, even by Christmas vacation the enrollment list has reduced to half of the students. The reason for high dropout rates is not because Houston area schools do not care about education, they are not taking it serious. According to the Houston Chronicle, a Houston area newspaper, † the Houston Independent School District, for example, failed to account for 2,131 students who were enrolled in 1997-98 but not in 1998-99. By no means will that number decrease, if adults do not find what is taking our kids out of schools. A young mind only stops learning when obstacle are put in the way. Obstacle, such as juvenile crime and drug actitives, teen pregnacy, lack of family funds, and parents who do not care. Texas Education Agency reported in the Houston Chronicle, that the leading reason students dropout of school is crime and drug actitves. Children bring weapons along with homework to school every day. Some youngster do not make it to juinor high without a murder case. Majority of dropout will end up in prison and never see the front day of a college. Drug also taking the minds of our young kids. They look for anything that will help them cope with every day problems. While their problems are only grooming the addiction only get stronger. Half of the students will become additive to some type of drug, and become dropouts. Another obstacle that causes high dropout rates is teen pregnacy. Sadly, a large percent of younger learners become parents during high school. This obstacle usually affect females due to the fact that most male students do not stick around to support their child. Then the female has to figure a way to attend school and pay for a babysitter. Since, it takes money to raise a baby the mother only choice is to dropout of high school and maintain a full time job. Why do children decided to raise babies, instead of doing simple daily homework? That question remains to be a mystery to many adults. The third obstacle would be lack of family funds. Few families in today†s society still consist of a father and a mother. One parent struggling to support a family is not an easy thing for a child to watch. Eventually that youngster finds any methods to bring money into the house. Some students will find legal ways such as a job for extra money; the other half of the student particpate in illegal actitives to support their family. That child is worried about stopping his mother or father from crying over money problems every night. Last but not least, one of the problems is parents who do not care or unable to give proper care to their children. There are parents who have two or more jobs and feel that their children can watch themselves. Then other parents just can not control their kids. He or she leaves home that morning for school and the parent will not see them until two days later. The father or mother wants to help their children, but parents can only do so much. Even the laws do not take extreme measures on teen run away. The police brings the youngsters home so they can run away again the next morning. There also parents who have drug or criminal problems themselves. The parents are to worried about getting more drugs or stealing a car to care if their child is attending school. What happened to parents being the best role models they can be. Until Houston realzies the obstacles in younger learner lives the dropout statistics will only increase. While the numbers are rising our city will consist of uneducated people who did not finish high school. What type of city will Houston become if most of the citizens are high school dropouts? The city can only grow if there are educated people running it. Also, children being allowed to make the decision to dropout of school will only make the problem repeat itself. When parents are dropouts they usually do not have enough money to stop the cycle. If a parent drops out due to poverty most of them never get out of poverty. With out an education high paying jobs do not drop out of the sky, so that parent is raising his or her child like they were. What stops children from dropping out when they own parents were dropouts? Another effect of dropping out of school is going in and out of correctional system. According to America Skips School, an article by Benjamin Barber, â€Å"the government spends up to $35,000 a year to keep a young black male behind bars but a fraction of that to keep him in school. When he is released back to society it will be difficult to find a job, because he is an ex-criminal and a dropout. Many ex-criminals go in and out of prison due to the fact they can not find a decent job. As Barber states in America Skips School, â€Å"if Americans were serious parents, teachers, politicians, and kids themselves would find solutions to high school dropouts. Parents should have dreams that they child life will be better than their own. If a mother was a dropout why do her daugther has to be a dropout? Parents caring and showing it will also help dropout rates. Turning the television off and talking to their child for one hour will only make their relationship stronger. When that child makes the decision to drop out of high school they could talk it over with their parents first. Then the parents could point out the effects of not having an education. If a parent talks to their children they will know that they are serious about school. Teachers play a major part with children attending school. Many teachers have stopped teaching with their hearts, but teaching for a paycheck. They must go beyond the classrooms to counsel at-risk students and their families. Teacher may not earn the highest salaries, but teaching should be an award by it†s self. They could also help by making the classroom a fun place to be. Children will start to drift off when the classroom is boring or they feel dumb. What can a student learn if a teacher†s only method of teaching is sitting behind a desk a reading a book to them? Teaching with a loving heart will let the students know that teachers are serious about school. Politicians can put an end to a lot of school problems by changing a few laws. The government could bring poorer communities up to standard by finding other sources of funding for Houston schools besides property taxes. Instead, of spending taxes to build a new dome for entertainment; politicians should have fought for the taxes to build and improve schools. Government should offer more programs for student before they dropout. When a student decides to drop out of school they should have to attend a one day program that will show them the effects of dropping out of school. When they complete the program if they still decided to drop out of high school they should have to sign a wavier reading: â€Å"By signing this, I realize I will not have the skills to survive in the 21st century. † They are then presented with a † Certificate of Dropping Outing. † If politicians were to make it harder to drop out of school then the student would know that they are serious about school. Children themselves could put an end to dropping out of school. They could set goals and stuck with them no matter what peer pressures come their way. Kids could become members of some type of peer support groups, so they would have someone to talk to when they need a listening ear. They could also be more active in church, instead of hanging on the street corner getting in trouble. Youngster should strive for the top and do not give up because of obstacles standing in the way. When students start to take school serious then the other parties will perform their roles. Everyone places a part in children getting an education. If one person fails to do their part then the dropout rates will only increase.

My household went from two incomes to one, in a matter of months. There was no time to prepare. My husband Bucky works for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad; therefore his pay was never the same. So, my income was very important. I got paid the same amount every two weeks. We could budget our expenses off that amount. We always had extra money, a savings account and a Christmas fund in place.We had the luxuries of two incomes. Lucky for us we didn’t live outside our budget. I was employed with US Cable for eight years. I succeed well in my job making a good income. I took several related courses to achieve the most in my pay. Taking every cable, internet, and telephone course offered. For very passing test we got a raise, this was something we were offered to do in our own time. We could even work Saturdays for overti me, and there was always someone who would give up there day to work.Julie would always give up her Saturday. My two oldest daughters didn’t live at home anymore. So, we got too hang out more together. I got to spend more time with my new grandson Lane. My daughter Donna had just started college. My title became grandma-sitter. My daughter Deana liked to come over and spoil her nephew, when she wasn’t working. My youngest daughter Shelby also enjoyed me being home. I picked her up from school and most days she would get a sweet tea from McDonalds. That was a treat.My husband Bucky also enjoyed me home during the day. You see there were many days we would go without seeing each other; because of our schedules. In the conclusion we gained more family time and more family meals. We would actually dine out two to three times a week: before my job ended. Now it’s maybe that a month. The effect of losing my job became a blessing really. As of today I am a full time student at college and have made more memories with my family. The effect was well worth the impact.

In â€Å"Xiao Xiao†, she is a twelve-year-old girl who is married with a two-year-old husband, Chunguan, and as his caretaker in her youth. While â€Å"When I was in Xia Village† is a period when narrator spends his/her time in Xia village and make friends with a village girl Zhenzhen. She is sent to Japan to spy Japanese government after she is raped by Japanese soldiers. When she goes back village due to her disease, people look down upon her and laugh at her. Finally she runs away from Xiao Dabao’s propose and seeks for a fresh life in city. On one hand, Xiaoxiao wants to escape from her offence, on the other hand, she has desire to have sex with a real man, she cannot wait her little husband to grow up when she is twenty years old. So she cheats on her little husband â€Å"involuntarily† on surface. In addition, her husband’s families take her in but she never drops the idea to be like a coed, â€Å"One day, word spread that the coeds were back again. People at that time set this tradition because they think girl is useless because daughters will be others’ sooner or later, so it is better to send her earlier to save family’s food. To the bride’s family, accept a girl into their family is not only a way to take care of children, but also add a worker to help farming as a free labor. That’s why to be contrast with other female students in town, Xiaoxiao is adulterer.
