Being a citizen of the United States is a luxury that many Americans take for granted. Many of the illegal immigrants come to America where they hope to obtain the freedom that is not given in their country. There is a serious problem with the immigration policy: it is very difficult for immigrants to become an actual U.S. citizen. If the policy were to be readjusted, and the length of time the immigrant has to live in the United States before they can become a citizen were to be shortened, illegal immigration could be slowed or even stopped. According to statistics from the Pew Research Center, from about 2005 to 2012 the population of illegal immigrants in the United States was over eleven million (Illegal Immigration in the US, 1990-2014.). These illegal immigrants are not just from Mexico. They are from the Middle East and other places across the globe (Preface to Political Responses to Illegal Immigration .). This means that over eleven million people in the United States are not even citizens of this country. Some of the people may have come over as a shuttle worker, but as stated by sociologist Douglas Massey at Princeton University, because of the border being so difficult to cross back over some of the immigrants are just coming over and staying (Schrag). With the border being so hard to cross back and forth and the requirements of becoming a citizen being so extensive, it is not surprising that the immigrants find a way to enter illegally.
